Self-help groups: What they ARE:
  • Share experiences, information, and strategies for living successfully with mood disorders.
  • Peer-led.
  • Safe and non-judgmental.
  • Confidential.
  • Offer emotional support, friendship, and a sense of belonging.
  • Meet regularly.
  • Free of charge.
However, what they are NOT:
  • Not a pity party.
  • Not a dating service.
  • Not a gripe session.
  • Not a place to diagnose.
  • Not an expert giving a lecture.
  • Not a replacement for professional care.
  • Not a theater for people craving attention to monopolize any discussion.
  • Not a place to gossip about, harass, or otherwise add to the depression of others in this group.
DBSA Colorado Springs brings together people with similar problems who support each other through sharing and caring. We share our feelings, experiences and coping strategies. We do not recommend or prescribe medications, nor are we a substitute for professional treatment; we only share experiences.

Our support groups are not therapy groups, facilitators are not therapists or diagnosticians, but are members themselves who have ongoing training in facilitating.

A few remarks from a recent Support Group Survey on what people like about the group:
  • "The group has made me realize that I am not alone; my thoughts, feelings, and troubles are shared by many; this makes the load lighten somehow."
  • "Feeling of fellowship and bonding; we're all in it together."
  • "Being able to open up without criticism; being able to help others with my input."
  • "I've made new friends and learned concepts that help with dealing with my illness."

These statements came from Colorado Springs, but could have been from any one of the thousand or so support groups that DBSA maintains nationwide.
